The bachelor’s program of Department of Civil Engineering was established in 1997, and the master's and doctoral programs were established in 2001 and 2004, respectively. Currently, there are 14 full-time teachers (13 full professors and 1 associate professor) and 14 adjunct teachers. Department of Civil Engineering has passed the certification of the Institute of Engineering Education Taiwan (IEET) and deemed compliant with the standards of the Engineering Academic Center (EAC). The Department is not only exempt from the evaluation accreditation of the Ministry of Education but also has the following advantages: (1) credible certification system, and the Department is responsible to the society and country; (2) as the Department and graduate institute have passed the certification, the teaching quality is guaranteed; (3) the academic qualifications are recognized and meet the threshold for applying for an international professional license; (4) graduates have clear core competencies which enhance their self-confidence in employment; (5) the Department attaches importance to both design and implementation, with widely recognized professional competences; (6) student-centered teaching which is close to the future development of students; and (7) the opinions from students/parents are valued, and the Department and graduate institute are committed to self-growth.
Considering the expertise of teachers and responding to the needs of the times, the Department of Civil Engineering focuses its research and teaching on five aspects: structural engineering, hydraulic engineering, earth engineering, environmental engineering, and transportation engineering, and each aspect attaches equal importance to both theories and practices. With the well-established faculty and learning environment, more than 90% of the fresh graduates of the Department of Civil Engineering have continued their studies and were admitted to national university graduate institutes for further studies, such as National Taiwan University, National Taiwan University of Science and Technology, National Central University, National Chiao Tung University, National Chung Hsing University, National Cheng Kung University, National Sun Yat-sen University, and National Chi Nan University. Every year, many graduates pass the national examination for higher civil service, pass the general national examination, and enter state-owned institutions. There are also many graduates who have obtained the certificates of civil engineering related technicians (civil technicians, structural technicians, and earth technicians), and the graduates of Department of Civil Engineering can be seen everywhere in the practical field and the public service system. Overall, the employment opportunities of the Department of Civil Engineering after graduation are quite optimistic and diversified.
The name of our school is National Chi Nan University. As the name implies, the school hopes that all the school graduates will develop a broad international outlook under the existing outstanding traditions. The popular trend of “think globally, act locally” should be able to adequately reflect this idea. The students in the Department of Civil Engineering, National Chi Nan University should also aim at achieving this idea and make efforts to become public intellectuals. National Chi Nan University has also taken relevant measures in foreign language training and enrichment, such as encouraging and subsidizing students to participate in foreign language tests. Moreover, the school strengthens English-related courses every week. Furthermore, the school also provides other special sports courses, such as archery and rowing, hoping to cultivate students attaching importance to five ways of life.
In addition, in response to the educational policy of integrating learning and application, the Department of Civil Engineering offers an integrated course [Civil Engineering Design Practice] to enable the students to apply their professional knowledge to engineering practice. The Department also offers [3 credits for a professional internship] and [6 credits for a corporate internship], which respectively provide students with opportunities for winter and summer vacation internships and semester-based internship credits. In addition to obtaining credits, the students can also connect with social enterprises during their studies and prepare to enter the workplace. In recent years, in order to fulfill the University Social Responsibility (USR), the Department of Civil Engineering encourages teachers and students in the department to proactively explore local needs, solve problems with their own professional knowledge and skills, and promote regional development. At present, the Department has become the leader among the national universities in the promotion of [University Social Responsibility Practice Program] of the Ministry of Education. Although the establishment of the Department of Civil Engineering is relatively late compared to other departments associated with civil engineering in the universities in Taiwan, with the full support of the school and the concerted efforts of all the teachers and students of the Department of Civil Engineering, we are confident that we can achieve our goal - We believe that students today will be proud of being a member of Department of Civil Engineering, National Chi Nan University, and in the upcoming future, Department of Civil Engineering, National Chi Nan University will be proud of our graduates.
